“You answer us with awesome and righteous deeds, God our Saviour, the hope of all the ends of the earth and of the farthest seas, who formed the mountains by your power, having armed yourself with strength, who stilled the roaring of the seas, the roaring of their waves, and the turmoil of the nations.” Psalm 65:5-7
The speed with which the world can become unsettled is a reminder of how delicate and fragile the peace we enjoy really is. From a national Israeli holiday to worldwide unrest has taken just 20 rapid days and all the noises indicate further escalation right now.
How easy it would be for us to become unsettled too, as we watch the news and read the articles. But, whilst the world has nothing to hope in and the threat of war looms over their lives like a dark cloud, our hope is rooted in better things.
Jesus reminds us not to ‘worry about our lives’ Matthew 6:25 and the Apostle Paul says, ‘Do not be anxious about anything, but in every situation…present your requests to God’ Philippians 4:6
What gives them such confidence? Why should we listen to them when the whole world seems to be so concerned?
At least part of the answer is found in Psalm 65 – God our saviour is ‘the hope of all the ends of the earth!’ Our God performs awesome deeds and all of them are good! Our God made the mighty mountains by his immense power. If he wants to, he can still the most raging sea imaginable – Jesus did!
His goodness and his strength are the very bedrock of our confidence in a sea of unrest. And a sea of unrest is what we are seeing right now. Psalm 65 says that the unrest; the turmoil of the nations is like the roaring of the seas. So, our conclusion is, that the God that can still the roaring sea can still the roaring nations too, when his time is right. He is our unshakable hope in this world of turmoil. So don’t be anxious but pray to a God like this!
